I was told by a Swedish teacher that unless you speak Swedish like a native and you have very good business contacts then you should not expect to get a job. I do not want to be negative (but that has been my experience in the Swedish job market and I am also in the computer field)
SvaraRaderaMy advice will be that your husband learned English/Swedish and then since your brother works for Spotify maybe he would recommend your husband somewhere.
Also, he can look for jobs in http://se.indeed.com/ . Knowing English may be a way to go first. He should use https://www.duolingo.com/ to learn it online. It is a very good application to learn languages.
Good luck
That's pretty harsh of the Swedish teacher! I know plenty without perfect Swedish and with qualified jobs that match their professional profiles. Of course, it is harder without the language (as it would be in any country), but not impossible.
RaderaActually, after publishing the portfolio and start spreading the word (this week) he already got three interviews. So, things are moving, and he can't just sit around and wait until he's learned Swedish before even start looking. He's been using duolingo for some months, it's great and he just recently started a course at Folkuniversitet, which also seems to be really good (while waiting for SFI which seems to take forever).
Thanks for the indeed-link, I'll pass it on!
I do not know if the teacher was harsh about saying that but I have been here for 6 months and I also started looking for a job right away and Nothing (I have plenty of experience in NYC and I am still being contacted by employment agencies from there).
RaderaThere I had just one interview with 1 French company. Most of the Swedish companies just sent a thank you but no thank you email.
And I honestly hope and wish that your husband has better luck that I have had. And I also know plenty of people that are highly qualified and are unemployed.
SFI is the worse thing ever so if you are paying for a Swedish class then it is the best way to go. SFI in Folkuniversitet is as bad as any other place. I have been forced to change my SFI once and I am now thinking to pay for a Swedish class.
If your husband speaks English well then maybe he should think about applying for Swedish for professional: http://sfx-yrke.se/eng and I will also apply for that - The dateline is 11/23.
I heard that it is a better way to learn Swedish and with possibilities to get in contact with companies that will hire people.
Of course it's a lot more difficult not knowing the language, but that goes for all countries. All I'm saying is that it is not impossible, I personally know some success-stories. That is, it's worth trying.
RaderaAnyway, we are paying for a Swedish course (at Folkuniversitetet), as there is a waiting line for SFI so he hasn't even gotten to start yet. Then we'll see, all depends on how the work-search goes. I've heard about SFX before, but it only seems to be Stockholm so it's not possible, unfortunately.
Just a thought, in your case, if you are getting so many offers from the US, and you are in the computer/IT sector, isn't it possible to work remote? My brother for example just got a job with a US company and will be working remote from Sweden. That might be an option?
I really do not like to argue about this issue but Sweden is the Worse country to integrate people in the labor market. Yes, it is possible for a few people (too few if I say so myself) and I have been trying for several months now.
RaderaSFI in Folkuniversitet is bad as any other places, how? there is a shortage of teachers all over Sweden and few people want to teach the language so the classes are like this: one teacher will come one day, another one will come another day, then another the third day if you are lucky or you just do not have a teacher at all. One class can have students for level 3C and 3D and the teacher will be trying to teach something that 3D would understand while 3C students are not able to grasp. And that is without thinking about the different teaching styles that each one of the teacher uses. The paid classes are better (I heard and they have a permanent teacher)
I did not say that I have many job offers in the US. I said that several employers/employment agencies contacted me for interviews. My profession is more specific therefore most US companies prefer to have the employee in-house. My profession is to provide Application Support to proprietary systems (systems created in-house) so it is harder to get a job that require me to work remotely.
But to be honest, I do not plan to stay in Sweden. I just feel that Sweden is having to many problems right now (see link), but I am not saying that the US is perfect (I will be the first one to point out what I do not like about the US) but Sweden does not feel like home and it will never be.
Home is the US!
But I wish you and your husband all the very best and I honestly wish that your husband can get a job in here.

SvaraRaderaÅh men vad snällt! Tack så mycket, jag ska vidarebefordra tips!
